QUESTION:
Isn’t the idea that cats and dogs are put into petfood just a lie made up by animal rights activists?
ANSWER:
Unfortunately not, it is true.
We at the International Association of Veterinary Care are appalled by the inclusion of euthanized cats and dogs in our pet food by the rendering industry.
Our view is that the rendering industry must become government controlled to stop this practice occurring.
As Eileen Layne of the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) says, "When you read pet food labels, and it says 'meat and bone meal,' that's what it is: cooked and converted animals, including some dogs and cats."
Some of these dead pets -- those euthanized by veterinarians -- already contain the deadly chemical pentobarbital. According to University of Minnesota researchers, the sodium pentobarbital used to euthanize pets "survives rendering without undergoing degradation."
A Canadian company, Sanimal Inc., was putting 40,000 pounds of dead dogs and cats into its pet food until discontinuing the practice under enormous public protest in June 2001. Other manufacturers are still engaging in this despicable practice.
The city of Los Angeles alone sends some two hundred tons of euthanized cats and dogs to a rendering plant every month – much of which shows up again in our cans of pet food.
