QUESTION:

Please can you explain what the “Rendering” process is?

ANSWER:

The process of Rendering occurs before the “ingredients” arrive at Heinz, Mars or Nestle’s manufacturing plants for further processing – and it is here that many of the most harmful ingredients of dog foods are added.

The rendering industry is unregulated and we vets are strongly opposed to it.

It simply removes animal toxic waste including diseased, condemned, rotting and cancerous animals and “boils up” the mix before sending it off to pet food manufacturing plants.

The diseased and decaying animals – which are the last things we want to be feeding our Labradors - are accompanied by a whole menu of other unwanted ingredients which are all thrown into the pit to be boiled up.

  • Pesticides enter the rendering process via poisoned livestock
  • Insecticides are included because animals are frequently shoved into the pit with flea collars still attached. The insecticide Dursban arrives in the form of cattle insecticide patches.
  • Pharmaceuticals leak from antibiotics in livestock and euthanasia drugs given to pets are also included.
  • Heavy metals accumulate from a variety of sources -- pet ID tags, surgical pins and needles.
  • Plastic even winds up going into the pit. Unsold supermarket meats, chicken and fish arrive in styrofoam trays and shrink wrap. No one has time for the laborious task of unwrapping thousands of rejected meat packs. More plastic is added to the pits with the arrival of cattle ID tags, plastic insecticide patches and the green plastic bags containing pets from veterinarians.

Renderers are causing toxic wastes to be fed to our Labradors which results in the HUGE health issues, increasing at an alarming rate, which we see in veterinary clinics on a daily basis.
