QUESTION:
I was told that condemned meat is legally acceptable in commercial dog food, surely this is not allowed by law?
ANSWER:
Thank you for your question, which is one we are frequently asked.
Unfortunately, condemned parts and animals rejected for human consumption can legally be rerouted into commercial pet foods.
We believe this is one of the most disgraceful practices in the pet food manufacturing industry.
The industry has a shorthand for this, the “4-Ds”:
Animals that have died because of disease, cancer, injury, or were decaying after death are all sources of meat for meat meal used in pet food. The dead animal might not be processed until days after its death.
While the cooking process may kill some bacteria, it does not eliminate the endotoxins some bacteria produce during their growth and are released when they die. These toxins can cause sickness and disease.
Pet food manufacturers do not test their products for endotoxins and we have seen an enormous rise in veterinary clinics of a wide range of illnesses caused by contaminated pet foods.
